Gender Diversity Advocates Honor Gabriel on Virtual Board Walk of Fame
The leader of Middle Tennessee’s largest credit union is now featured on a university kiosk dedicated to gender diversity.
Ascend Federal Credit Union President and CEO Caren Gabriel was honored by Nashville CABLE’s Women on Corporate Boards committee and the Women Corporate Directors during the Virtual Board Walk of Fame event Sept. 30 at Lipscomb University.
The event honored female corporate directors who serve on private or public company boards with revenues greater than $200 million and/or market cap greater than $200 million. Gabriel has served as the President and CEO of Ascend since 2004. With $1.675 billion in assets and more than 145,000 members, Ascend is the largest credit union in Middle Tennessee and one of the largest federally chartered credit unions in the United States. Gabriel has also been a Director for CUNA Mutual Holding Company since 2012.
She joins other honorees permanently featured in the Virtual Walk of Fame located in the Axel Swang Center for Business Administration at Lipscomb University. The interactive kiosk honors Tennessee’s female CEOs and directors as well as companies within the state that include women directors.
“This event helps to raise awareness among the business community in Tennessee and beyond of the need to appoint women to corporate boards, the availability of qualified women and the value women bring to those boards,” a release promoting the event stated.
Both Nashville CABLE and Women Corporate Directors advocate gender diverse corporate leadership.
“I am proud to be recognized for representing a company that is a model of gender diversity,” Gabriel said. “Men and women approach finances differently. Having a diverse staff and Board of Directors helps us examine the financial possibilities for our members from many different angles, and our members benefit from that.”
Ascend is federally insured by the NCUA. Membership is limited.
